Hello Book Friend.
I hope you are doing well.
I was wondering, have you heard about “The Inklings"?
If you haven't, this is your day.
The Inklings is one of the most legendary book clubs in history. It was an informal group that met at the University of Oxford for almost 20 years. It comprised 12 people and received visitors every once in a while. What made The Inklings unique was not just its longevity (20 years); it was its success. The names of major The Inklings will ring a bell;
CS Lewis
J.R.R Tolkien
Hugo Dyson
Charles Williams
And there were others like Warren Lewis, CS Lewis's elder brother, and Christopher Tolkien, J.R.R Tolkien's son.
My favorite of them is CS Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. CS Lewis is the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, while Tolkien authored "The Lord of the Rings". Between them, these two books have sold more than half a billion copies and have been translated into more than a hundred languages. R.R. Tolkien's Lord of The Rings has sold more than 600 million copies. It is one of the best-selling books of all time. However, it was nearly never published. Although Tolkien had been writing short stories about middle earth, he had often kept those for himself. He thought no one else would be interested in his fictional creations. For many years, he wrote and kept them to himself. One day, he brought a copy of his writing to the Inklings meeting. It was a tradition at the Inklings that a book or a poem would be read aloud and the members would sit quietly listening. Afterward, comments, criticism, and suggestions from the members would flow. On that day, Lewis became animated when listening to Tolkien. For Tolkien, the keen attention Lewis paid and the comments he offered changed his mind about his works.
Lewis began following up with Tolkien with questions about his work. Gradually, Tolkien came around to see that his work was important. He wrote more. CS Lewis read the works regularly. He would read them and send them back to Tolkien with suggestions. Many years later, Tolkien said of Lewis, “But for his interest and unceasing eagerness for more, I should never have brought The Lord of the Rings to a conclusion”.
On the other hand, it was Tolkien who helped Lewis become a Christian. Helped Lewis clarify some of the questions he had about the faith. Soon, he was baptized and became a Christian for the rest of his life.
The Inklings read together, challenged each other intellectually, pushed each other to write more, and helped each other live better lives.
The Inklings Club provided companionship, an environment for pruning thoughts, and a place for growth, and it provided an accountability partner that made all of them the better for it.
