This is the 6th tip for reading. This is the most controversial of all, and you donβt have to agree.
Follow the trends. I am one of those who hold the opinion that one should not follow every trend. However, I am also one of those who hold the opinion that you can take advantage of trends to read. For instance, during the early months of the pandemic, I began reading books about pandemics in history. My interest, with or without my agreement, had been shifted completely to pandemics. I simply had no option. I wanted to dig into the history of such pandemics to see what others had done in such circumstances.
Last week, I began reading the book 1421: The Year China Discovered The World however I dropped it yesterday. My interest had shifted to something else. I started reading this book by Jonathan Sacks, Not In Gods' Name. It is a book about religious conflicts and how the Abrahamic religions have been used over the years to perpetuate religious violence. My city, Jos is currently experiencing one of those periodic tragic crises. We were on 24 hours curfew for 4 days. It is no wonder that my mind has been bothered with such an issue.
At this particular moment in my life, I am motivated more than ever to read about such things, religious violence. And at a different time, say, for instance, when I will be traveling to China, I will be far more interested in reading 1421 than in reading Not In Gods Name.
You can make use of such opportunities too. You can read in season, and then when youβve become stronger, you can read out of season. I think the goal is to become good at reading that you read in season and out of season.
Hey, I have to go back to work, any questions? Ask in the comment box.
Yes, I totally agree with this strategy....reading in season. It works for me too.... My question is..where can I get a copy of the book "Not in God's name"
I'm sure going to try this one out and hope this strategy works for me. I will be back with my feedback. Thanks for sharing.
