I am reading this biography of Frederick Douglass. Douglass was a formerly enslaved person who ran away and became a freeman. Not just that, he became a famous abolitionist speaking against slavery. By the time Douglass escaped from slavery, many whites were using the argument that a black slave couldn't be free and a good contribution. And then Douglass came out of nowhere, eloquent, young, intelligent, and hard-working. He was the evidence that a black person could become as bright as a white person.
He was hugely influential in the abolition movement. His life alone was an inspiration to many. He had been enslaved, taught himself to read and write, and now he was standing shoulder to shoulder with white people who could have been his master.
The life of Frederick Douglass inspires me.
Whatever you do, remember that you may be the example the world is looking for.
He once wrote, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."
