In 1889, the Detroit Free Press wrote an article pushing back against the idea of flying machines. For centuries, mankind has been fascinated by the idea of flying someday. The Detroit Free Press wrote,
โThe smallest possible weight of a flying machine, with the necessary fuel and engineer, could not be less than 300 or 400 pounds โฆ but there is a low limit of weight, certainly not much beyond fifty pounds, beyond which it is impossible for an animal to fly. Nature has reached this limit, and with her utmost effort has failed to pass it.โ
And in conclusion, it said flying machines โappear impossibleโ.
Just a decade later, two high school dropouts completed the first successful powered airplane. On December 17, 1903, the first controlled flight happened in North Carolina. The Wright Brothers had broken conventional wisdom. Orville and Wilbur Wright have etched their names in the annals of aviation history. Why? They chose to break the rules.
