One night in August 2014, my family was woken up in the middle of the night and asked to drink salt mixed with hot water and shower with the same.
This was supposed to cure the dreaded Ebola disease that had arrived in Nigeria through Patrick Sawyer. Of course, this was nonsense. But millions of Nigerians underwent fell for this. Some, like myself, were scolded for refusing to take this. It should not have taken much to realize that this combination did not cure or prevent Ebola.
The major problem was that when everyone was panicking, people stopped thinking. They stopped living by evidence, by data, and by facts. Fear had clouded their judgments. This is one of the lessons I learned from this book. Freakonomics.
